Math Language - Learning through Play
We have been using Learning through play prompts and provocations to do integrated Maths activities. We used autumn leaves to sort into groups based on size, colour and type. Then we presented our data using pictographs and bar graphs.
We had a lot of discussion about which type of leaves are more or less or same as.

Toy cars sorting - Learning through Play

Sorted cars into groups - racing cars, cool cars, trucks, vans, police cars, big cars, small cars. Then we discussed how we grouped and shared ideas about which group has more and then we used road ways to show which lane on the road is for bikes, cars, police cars, big trucks. Everyone had different ways of groupings.
Then we counted them in groups including place value (of counting in tens)
We had questions like - why should we have a different place for racing cars? Do we need a  different lane for Big trucks ?

Animal sorting - Learning through play

We used animal sorting into groups - farm animals and wild animals.
What do these animals eat and why can't have wild animals with farm animals
Maths language we used during our discussions - more / less/ same as - estimating, counting in groups
